John Adair

John is the founder of JMA Decorators.  Emigrating to New Zealand from Scotland in 1995,  John brought with him over 25 years of experience in the industry.  John’s high profile UK projects included work on Nuclear Power Stations, ScotRail bridges, Heritage Trust sites, 5 star hotels and the Edinburgh Sheriff’s Court – all of which required specific attention to detail and all of which received it.

Lorraine has full control over all financial aspects of JMA.  She has been John’s right hand man (so to speak) from the outset and is fully conversant in painting techniques and tips.  Lorraine’s talents encompass all aspects of accounts payable and receivable, IT systems and as if that’s not enough she also fills the role of PA to the Managing Director.  And she’s still smiling!

Laurie Smaling

General Manager

As General Manager Laurie is involved in all aspects of the business with prime responsibility for strategic expansion.  Laurie brings to JMA international experience having held senior management positions throughout Asia and Australia.  Laurie has a particular passion for analysing paint maintenance with a goal to enhance not just building presentation but property value.

Paul Hallahan
Business Development Manager

Paul has worked within the paint industry for over 38 years. Having run his own large painting business in the UK and, together with working for one of NZ’s largest paint manufacturers for some 15 years – this has provided Paul with a valuable all round knowledge of the painting industry.  Paul is also an active member of the BCITO National Advisory Group.


Gordon Anderson
Operations Manager/Health & Safety Manager

Gordon has recently joined JMA Decorators having emigrated from Scotland in 2012.  He brings extensive experience within the painting and decorating industry having time served under the “old school” which covers all aspects of the craft.  In addition Gordon has experience in FM at senior management level with annual budgets in excess of $NZ15 million.  He is trained in the management and delivery of recognised international systems – ISO 18001 Health & Safety; ISO 9001 Quality and ISO 14001 Environmental Systems.

Administration Manager

Angela brings to the JMA Group over 30 years of administrative and customer service experience.  Her role at JMA Group Services covers secretarial; administration; accounts receivable and payable; wages; as well as providing admin support to the Managing Director, General Manager, Operations Manager, and Project Managers.

Alastair McLellan
Project Manager Maintenance

Alastair joined JMA Decorators in 2007 and his previous experience and training has accelerated his rise through the Company to take over the busy and important role of Maintenance Painter.  Alastair is well known for having ‘an eye for detail’ and takes considerable pride in ensuring all of the projects under his control run smoothly and on time with the minimum of disruption to his clients.

Pera Simcock
Project Manager

Pera is a Trade Certified Painter and Decorator.  His experience spans 25 years covering all aspects of the decorating team framework.  He is dedicated, conscientious and an incredibly valuable member of our team.

Quan Mai
Project Manager

After working and studying both in Czech Republic and in Germany, Quan returned to his home town in Vietnam where he built his home and a photographic business from scratch. In 2002 he emigrated to New Zealand to further his English speaking skills and three years later was joined by his wife and children. In 2004 he joined JMA decorators and soon developed a team of painting staff with a wonderful work ethic and the desire to both please and succeed. JMA Decorators have many return customers who specifically request the attention of Quan and his team each visit.
